Care Tips for Gemstones, Pearls & Enamel
GEMSTONES
Gemstones bring colour and personality to your jewellery, but each stone has its own needs. Follow these simple tips for long-lasting beauty:
Know Your Gem:
Some stones, like sapphires, are tough, while others (like opals or turquoise) need extra gentle handling. Check what type you have.
Clean With Care:
Most gems can be cleaned with mild soap and lukewarm water. Skip soaking soft or porous stones, and avoid harsh cleaners or steam.
Avoid Heat & Sudden Temperature Changes:
Rapid temperature shifts can cause certain stones to crack. Keep them away from hot sunlight or extreme cold.
No Chemicals, Please:
Perfume, hairspray, and cleaning products can dull or even damage gemstones. Add your jewellery after your beauty routine.
Remove Before Physical Activity:
Exercise, swimming, or heavy chores can loosen gem settings or scratch delicate stones.
Store Separately:
Hard gems like diamonds can scratch softer ones. Keep gemstones in individual pouches or separate compartments.
Check Your Settings:
Prongs and bezels can loosen over time. Inspect them regularly and have a jeweller tighten any loose stones.
Skip Ultrasonic Cleaners For Fragile Stones:
Emeralds, pearls, opals, and treated stones should never go in ultrasonic machines.
PEARLS
Pearls are organic and naturally delicate — treat them with a little love and they’ll reward you with long-lasting glow:
Last On, First Off:
Put pearls on after makeup, perfume, and hairspray. These products can damage their soft surface.
Avoid Chemicals Completely:
Chlorine, cleaning agents, and acids can eat away at a pearl’s lustre. Keep them far away.
Clean Gently After Wearing:
Wipe pearls with a soft cloth to remove oils and sweat. For a deeper clean, use mild soap and water — no soaking.
Store With Breathing Room:
Avoid airtight containers. Pearls like a little moisture to stay hydrated. Keep them in a soft pouch away from harder jewellery.
Wear Them Often:
Pearls stay luminous with regular wear; your natural skin moisture helps maintain their glow.
Avoid Heat & Dryness:
Extreme heat can cause pearls to crack. Store them somewhere cool and away from direct sunlight.
Check Stringing:
Pearl strands should be restrung every 1–2 years, especially if worn often. Look for knots between each pearl — a sign of quality.
No Harsh Cleaning Machines:
Ultrasonic and steam cleaners can permanently damage pearls.
ENAMEL JEWELLERY
Enamel jewellery shines with color and smooth finish, but needs gentle handling to stay flawless:
Avoid Harsh Sprays & Chemicals:
Perfume, alcohol-based products, and cleaners can wear down enamel or cause fading.
Handle With Care:
Enamel is like glass — dropping it or bumping it against hard surfaces can cause chips or cracks.
Soft Cleaning Only:
Wipe with a damp cloth after each wear. For deeper cleaning, use mild soap and lukewarm water. Skip anything abrasive.
Store Separately:
Enamel can scratch easily, especially when stored with harder metals or gemstones. Use a soft pouch or padded box.
Temperature Matters:
Extreme heat or sudden temperature shifts can weaken enamel. Keep it away from prolonged sunlight.
Remove Before Activities:
Swimming, workouts, or chores can lead to impact damage or wear down the enamel.
Check for Chips:
If you notice any cracks, take the piece to a jeweller experienced in enamel repair.
Avoid Ultrasonic Cleaners:
They can cause enamel to detach from the metal.
